Are you wondering what the well-dressed patient wears to a chiropractic appointment these days? If so, read on because, in this guide, we tell you what’s in, what’s out, and what’s comfortable for an important meeting with your chiropractor.
It may be tempting to treat your chiropractic appointment like a business meeting and dress accordingly. However, there are some occasions where being smart and professional just doesn’t cut it. Getting a chiropractic adjustment is one of those times!
In fact, this is one time when venturing out in public wearing a pair of leggings, or baggy trousers and a top, is not committing a cardinal fashion faux pas.
Dress as you would for a comfortable day lying around the house doing nothing. Loose, comfortable, relaxing clothing that is easy to move around in, and sensible footwear.
You are probably going to be poked (a little bit), prodded, and placed in various positions for easy adjusting. Tight restrictive clothing will make this unnecessarily uncomfortable.
Jewellery goes on the ‘out’ list. Large dangly earrings, ornate necklaces, and fancy bracelets and rings will get snagged, and get in the way. Leave them at home (safest option) or wear them as far as the reception area then take them off and put them in your bag. You’ll probably be asked to do this anyway.
Don’t pile on multiple layers of clothing. If it’s cold, wear a warm shirt with something like an easily removable jacket. What you ideally want to be wearing when you reach the consult room is just a single layer of comfortable clothing.
This makes it easy for your chiropractor to perform the necessary adjustments and manipulations. And for you to move, or be moved, as required.
Scrap the shape defining, stomach compressing, movement-restricting (or skimpy!) undergarments. They could (will) make your chiropractic adjustment uncomfortable. Wear comfortable loose fitting garments that support but don’t constrict.
As adjustments typically happen to your back or shoulders, wear a loose-fitting top so the chiropractor can reach those areas.
Consider teaming your loose fitting shirt or top with a pair of matching leggings or yoga pants. They’re comfortable, and flexible, and will let you move freely whilst also allowing access to your hips and lower spine.
You’ll probably be asked to take off your shoes during your treatment so pack, or wear, a pair of socks if it’s cold. It could be a good opportunity to break out the novelty socks the kids gave you for Christmas!
Speaking of socks, choose your shoes wisely too. If it’s your first appointment, your chiropractor will probably need to assess your posture and spinal alignment. That will be difficult to do if you’re wearing high heels or dress shoes.
Wear comfortable flatties that can be removed easily, and don’t alter your posture.
Above all, remember that your situation is unique to you so if you have any concerns about your clothing, and what to wear, talk to your chiropractor before your appointment. They can offer advice based on what your treatment plan is likely to involve, and the techniques they’ll be using.
Wearing the right clothes for a chiropractic appointment can make a big difference to your comfort levels during your appointment, physically and psychologically.
A loose, comfortable top teamed with a pair of leggings or comfortable pants, as well as flat shoes, are ideal choices, as is leaving off the jewellery. If you have any queries or concerns, talk to your chiropractor.
