I love exploring the countryside around Andover on foot. It’s a fantastic way to get some exercise in the fresh Hampshire air, escape the hustle and bustle of town, and appreciate the beauty of nature. Luckily, there are many fantastic walks around Andover to choose from. However, I do have my favourites!
This one tops my list of favourite walks around Andover!
Located on the southern edge of Andover, Rooksbury Mill Nature Reserve is conveniently close to town. The 1 – 2 miles of trails meander through the reserve around the picturesque lakes, wetlands, and woodland areas teeming with wildlife.
It’s a great spot for a short, relaxing walk in tranquil surroundings, or to do some bird watching.
Another favourite walk on the opposite side of town… I love taking time out to enjoy the 2 – 3 miles of riverbank, lakeside, and meadow walks in this beautiful nature reserve just north of Andover.
Anton Lakes Nature Reserve has a wonderful mix of scenery, trails, diverse plants, and wildlife to enjoy. It’s a great and fun walk to do with children too – so much to see and learn!
If history is your ‘thing’, this historic route makes for a perfect leisurely stroll through the picturesque Hampshire countryside around Andover. Walk in the footsteps of ancient Romans – this section of Harrow Way follows an ancient road that some believe dates back to the Bronze Age.
The scenic woodlands and stunning views from some of the high points along the way are pretty special too! All in all, it’s a great way to connect with nature and learn about the region’s rich history.
My favourite part of the trail though is the circular walk that takes in a few miles of Harrow Way through Andover before connecting with the Ladies Walk and circling back to Andover.
Danebury Hillfort is just a short drive from Andover and another favourite walking spot for history buffs and nature lovers.
From the 2 – 3 mile circular path around the old Iron Age hillfort, you can gaze out over the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and enjoy the fresh Hampshire country air.
As the impressive structure was once an operational fortress, wandering around its surviving structures is a great way to connect with the past and soak in some ancient UK history.
If you’re looking for a longer, more challenging hike, the Test Way is a good choice. This scenic trail follows the glorious River Test, famous for its crystal-clear waters and striking scenery.
The section from Andover to Stockbridge is around 8 – 10 miles (one way). If you do the round trip, it makes for an ideal day hike. Or you can do it one way for a shorter hike but you will need to arrange transport back to your starting point.
Harewood Forest is an ancient area of dense tranquil woodland close to Andover. Experts believe it’s been here since at least before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, probably much longer! Some of the oldest oak trees in the forest are likely several hundred years old too.
Today, several well-maintained trails wind through its cool shady depths. The trails cover about 3 – 5 miles and, because of the shade, are perfect for a peaceful escape into nature on a warm summer day.
Walhampton Common is a picturesque nature reserve just south of Andover with several miles of walking and cycling trails. With a mix of woodlands, meadows, and heathland, it’s a great place to enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride.
There are some stunning views of the surrounding Hampshire countryside to be had along some of the trails. And keep your eyes peeled for wildlife because the Common has plenty of it, including deer, rabbits, and birds.
Also just south of Andover, the Enham Trust Nature Reserve is an inclusive nature reserve. By inclusive, I mean the trails are conveniently wheelchair accessible so it’s a great option for people with disabilities.
The reserve covers a variety of natural habitats, including woodlands, meadows, and ponds, so is home to a diverse range of wildlife.
If you’re up for some walking around Andover, I hope my list of favourite local Andover walks will inspire you to get out there and enjoy our lovely Hampshire countryside.
